What to see in Alghero: an itinerary among history, sunsets, and nature

Alghero is not just an excellent seaside destination. It is a city with a vibrant soul, a fascinating history, and a culture unique in all of Sardinia. Nicknamed Barceloneta (little Barcelona) for its strong Catalan influences, still evident in its architecture and local language, Alghero is the ideal destination for those seeking the perfect mix of sea, cultural discoveries, and food and wine on their holiday.

If you are staying in one of our residences, here are the experiences that cannot be missing from your itinerary.

1. Getting lost in the charm of the Historic Center

The heart of Alghero is a labyrinth of cobbled streets, lively squares, and ancient historic buildings. Enter through the Porta a Terra and let your instinct guide you. Admire the Cathedral of Santa Maria, explore the characteristic red coral shops (the red gold of Alghero), and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the outdoor cafes on warm summer evenings.

2. The Bastions and unforgettable sunsets

The old town is surrounded by imposing fortified walls overlooking the sea. A walk along the Bastions (dedicated to great explorers like Marco Polo and Magellan) is an unmissable ritual, especially at sunset. From here you can admire the sun diving into the sea behind the majestic promontory of Capo Caccia. It is the perfect time for an unforgettable aperitif.

3. Excursion to Neptune’s Caves

One of the most famous natural wonders of Sardinia is located right here. Neptune’s Caves are a masterpiece carved by nature over millions of years, rich in stalactites, stalagmites, and with a striking underground salt lake.
You can reach them in two ways:

  • By sea: With the comfortable ferries that depart every day from the port of Alghero.
  • By land: By walking down the spectacular Escala del Cabirol (the roe deer’s steps), a staircase of over 600 steps carved directly into the rock of the Capo Caccia cliff. A breathtaking experience (and tiring on the way back!), but one that rewards you with unique panoramas.

4. Savoring the Catalan-style Lobster

You cannot leave Alghero without having tasted the king dish of its cuisine: the Catalan-style Lobster (Aragosta alla Catalana). Prepared simply with fresh tomatoes, onion, and a drizzle of local extra virgin olive oil, it is an explosion of flavor that captures the very essence of the Sardinian sea.
