On the cliffs of the Capo Caccia promontory there are several karstic cavities, such as the Grotta di Nettuno. The grotto is about 2.5 kms long, interspersed with a patchwork of stalagmites and stalactites, tunnels and halls surrounding a pristine lake. The sightseeing tour covers a few hundred metres thanks to a path carved into the side of the cave, which leads the visitor to the upper levels. The Grotto can be reached on foot or by boat. The Escala del Cabirol is situated at the outermost corner of the Capo Caccia promontory. After descending the 654 steps set on a cliff above the sea, you will reach the entrance of the cave while enjoying a thrilling scenery. Otherwise, a 40-minute boat trip from the harbour of Alghero will take you to the cave coasting along the Coral Riviera. Activities in Stintino:
If you spend a holiday in Stintino, you have to visit the National Park and Marine protected area of the Asinara. The park is named after the characteristic white donkey that can be easily spotted here. The island has a number of prehistoric (domus de Janas of Campu Perdu) and medieval sites (the ruins of the Camaldolese monastery of Sant’Andrea and Il Castellaccio). A lazaretto was established here in 1885, an ossuary in 1936 (remains from the Great War) and a supermax prison in 1975 (where Brigatists and Mafiosi were imprisoned). The small island, where judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were sent to plan the maxi-trial against the Sicilian Mafia in 1985, can be visited by bike, off-road vehicle, train or on horseback. Badesi is the perfect destination for water sports holidays. At Li Mindi beach, where the mistral wind often blows, there are kitesurfing and windsurfing schools offering a range of water activities. This area is extremely popular and, in fact, hosts a number of sporting events. The Italian Longboard Surfing Championship is held in Badesi in August. In September, Trinità D’Agultu e Vignola hosts the Marinedda Bay Open, an exciting surfing competition.
